Our History

1978

Founding of Joplin Family Self Help Center, Inc. quickly later became Family Self Help Center, Inc.

1979

Provided services to our first victim of domestic violence.

In the year 1979, we extended our commitment by offering support and assistance to our inaugural victim of domestic violence, marking a significant milestone in our mission to address and combat this pressing issue.

1981

We began providing Counseling Services.

In 1981, we expanded our scope of services by initiating counseling services, aimed at providing comprehensive support and guidance to individuals and families navigating through various challenges and crises.

1982

We began providing Sexual Assault Services.

The year 1982 saw the inception of our sexual assault services, marking a pivotal moment in our dedication to addressing the critical needs of survivors of sexual violence within our community.

1983

We began providing Alcohol and Drug Treatment Services.

Recognizing the profound impact of substance use disorders, we initiated alcohol and drug treatment services to offer support, rehabilitation, and hope to those affected by addiction in 1983.

1984

We begin providing Specialized Services for Children.

Expanding our focus on holistic care, in 1984, we introduced specialized services tailored to meet the unique needs of children affected by domestic violence, substance use disorders, and other related challenges.

1986

We moved to our current building, formerly known as the Lafayette School building.

In 1986, we transitioned to our present location, the historic Lafayette School building, enabling us to expand our capacity and better serve the community from a centralized and accessible location.

1990

The Pumpkin Patch Daycare Center was custom built to their needs.

In 1990, we proudly inaugurated the Pumpkin Patch Daycare Center, a testament to our commitment to supporting families by providing high-quality childcare services tailored to their specific needs and circumstances.

1993

We began offering services in Neosho.

1999

We became the Newton County Drug Court provider.

Lafayette House secured a $15,000 grant in 1999 for Project CONSTRUCT, enhancing children's academic growth with a constructivist curriculum and acquiring playground equipment.

1999

RMHC Grant Program- Playground Equipment.

2007

Second Chances Benefit Thrift Store Opened.

Founded in 2007, Joplin's Second Chances Benefit Thrift Store supports Lafayette House's mission by providing resources for clients and partnering with the community, with all proceeds contributing to Lafayette House's operations.

2009

Ooh-La Lafayette Fundraiser Created.

A major milestone and community staple occurred in 2009, the annual "Ooh-la Lafayette" fundraiser supporting Lafayette House's programs for families affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, or substance abuse was created and remains as the only major fundraiser for the agency.

2018

Established Transitional Housing.

Lafayette House celebrated its 40th anniversary by opening Jade House, a $120,000 transitional housing unit symbolizing community support for those facing domestic violence, sexual assault, substance abuse, and addiction in 2018.

2022

Launched Prevention Education Program.

Lafayette House initiated a Prevention Education Program in 2022 for grades 6-12, empowering youth with knowledge and skills to make informed choices regarding teen dating violence.

2023

Celebrated 45 Years of Service.

Lafayette House celebrated its 45 years of dedicated service to the Southwest Missouri region on November 27, 2023

An integral part of Lafayette House's commitment to community well-being. As a state-licensed facility, we open our doors to clients of Lafayette House, partner agencies, and the wider community, providing unparalleled care for children aged six weeks through twelve years old.

Our vision is centered on delivering the highest standard of quality childcare, fostering physical, emotional, cognitive, and developmental wellness. At Pumpkin Patch, we strive to create a safe, nurturing, empowering, and creative environment where children can freely explore their surroundings, construct knowledge, and make healthy choices.

Embracing Project Construct's goals and theories, we seamlessly integrate them into our daily routines, especially for our preschool-age children, ensuring a holistic approach that aligns seamlessly with Lafayette House's overarching mission.
