Teen Dating Violence-Recognizing Warning Signs
Recognizing Warning Signs: Understanding Teen Dating Violence
Teen dating violence affects many young people in our community, with nearly 5 million high school students in the United States experiencing dating violence. Learning to spot concerning behaviors early can help prevent harmful situations and create safer relationships for our youth. At Lafayette House, we believe education and awareness are powerful tools for prevention. At Lafayette House, we're committed to addressing this serious issue through our comprehensive prevention education program
Understanding Control in Teen Relationships
Control in teen relationships often starts subtly. A partner might begin making small decisions about clothing choices or social activities, gradually expanding their influence over time. This control can grow into more serious possessive behavior, where one partner tries to determine who their girlfriend or boyfriend can spend time with or talk to. When someone starts pulling their partner away from friends and family, it's a serious warning sign that shouldn't be ignored.

The Digital Side of Dating Control
In today's world, dating control often happens through phones and social media. Warning signs include constant text messages demanding immediate responses, or a partner who needs to know their girlfriend or boyfriend's location at all times. While they might say this behavior shows they care, constantly monitoring someone's online activity or demanding access to their social media accounts is a form of control.
Emotional Pressure and Manipulation
Recognizing emotional manipulation can be tricky, especially for teens new to dating. Partners who frequently criticize, put down, or embarrass their girlfriend or boyfriend are showing concerning behavior. Some might threaten to harm themselves if their partner wants to end the relationship, or use guilt to control their partner's actions. These behaviors often come with unpredictable mood changes that leave their partner walking on eggshells.
