Teen Dating Violence

What is dating violence?

Teen dating violence is a serious issue that affects young people in communities across the country. Raising awareness and educating teens, families, and educators can help prevent harm and support healthy relationships. Dating violence is a type of domestic violence that can take place in person, online, or through technology. It can include physical violence, sexual violence, stalking, and mental or emotional abuse.

How does Lafayette House help?
While Lafayette House is unable to provide direct victim services to children and teens unless both the teen and a parent or guardian are participating in services, we can help connect individuals with resources in their area. We also offer several prevention education programs.

These programs are presented to children in local school districts, parents, and community members.

Prevention education programs we offer include:

  • “In Their Shoes” is an interactive simulation experience. This program can be used in classrooms and with educators, providers, and community members to build awareness about the complexities of teen relationships and how to be stronger advocates.

  • Dating Matters is designed for 6th and 7th grade students and equips them with knowledge and skills to navigate healthy relationships with dating partners, friends, and family.

  • Safe Dates is designed for 8th through 12th grade students and helps them identify the difference between caring and supportive relationships and controlling, manipulative, or abusive relationships.

  • Resource Booths provide interactive opportunities for students and staff to learn about healthy relationships, recognizing abuse, safe reporting, and substance use prevention.

  • Parent and Vitality Cafes create safe and welcoming spaces for parents, caregivers, teens, and community members to come together for honest and meaningful conversations.

  • And much more.

Why is prevention education important?
One in ten high school students has experienced physical violence from a dating partner in the past year. Prevention education helps teenagers understand what healthy relationships look like, recognize warning signs, and know what to do if they find themselves in an abusive situation.

Providing education and resources not only helps students make informed decisions about relationships, but also equips educators, parents, and family members with knowledge about warning signs and ways to support teens who may need help.
